I should really go to bed but I HAVE to share this with you: http://www.deadlinedames.com/?p=3724. That blog post is entitled “And yet another way in which writers are different…” and talks about how writers fantasize at night. Read it and then come back here.
Okay, well this part “Other people didn’t climb into bed and start by thinking, ‘Now, where did we leave off last night?'” really struck a chord with me because I do that. A lot. I’ll pick up where I left off the previous night. Also, despite kind of hating going to bed (the interwebz always has something interesting to show me), my stories make it worthwhile. I’ve been doing it to fall asleep since the age of 10. Another thing: my fantasies are fanfictions. (That sounds weird…) Back when I was 10, it was based on An Unfortunate Series of Events and I would save the Baudelaire orphans from Count Olaf and keep them in my bedroom where they’d be safe. A year later, it was Harry Potter. Then it became Lost, or Heroes or any TV show/book series I really loved.
And now I’m realizing that maybe I don’t get much sleep because I fantasize and not the other way round (fantasizing so I can fall asleep).
One final point: I hate going to bed too tired because then I can’t fantasize :(. Also, I never make up purely original stories. I just pick a world, add myself as a character and relax. I can’t imagine not doing that.
